Himalayan Hope Home recently completed a two classrooms construction of Puleli primary School in lower Solukhumbu District partnering with Edge of Seven, which is now upgraded to lower Secondary school benefitting 136 house hold having minimum average 5 members in each family. From this year more than 250 students are attending this school.
The local community and teachers were always looking for this day of upgraded school with new building and they had been requesting Himalayan Hope Home & District Education Office. We have been supporting a teacher salary since 5 years in the same school for the best care of every individual students providing quality education. This great project is jointly brought together with Edge of Seven, Architecture for Humanity, local Government and highest desire and interested of local communities. Building school in this remote Himalayan Community will always play a significant role in keeping students comfortable and safe in school. Whereas before the construction at least 50% of the students who finish grade 5 leave school since they have to travel an hour long distance to another village called Nunthala for grade 6 and above education and majority of this percentage being girls.
In a village a Girls student have many other responsibility beside of going to school, she is responsible for looking after younger siblings, helping household chores, collecting fire woods and water, assisting their parents everyday in the work they perform. So many parents does not want to send their kids in the school if due to the schooling their kids miss any work at home, they rather prefer to keep the kids in home and help around. A huge number of student’s parents never experience schooling life, so the parents consider girls don’t need to educate because she is belong to other family right after marriage and parents feel less responsible toward the girls at family due the lack of education. Now after the construction of this new blog two more years in school is assured for all these young future leaders of Nepal, which eventually impact in the society with a positive result.
With this school construction we have introduced a very new technology of construction that is more earthquake resistant than traditional stone construction and requires less skilled labor. The construction method uses rice bags filled with gravel or dirt from the project site to construct the walls which are then covered with chicken wire and plaster by cements.
This new building will serve thousands of students in the days to come and give them a gift of education. The interesting thing is that the new and well constructed school building suddenly validates the school, as a school. Parents in the community suddenly take the school seriously they see outside sources caring about the little school they built with their own two hands. They know that no one in their own community can afford to purchase a new school construction or even re- construction so a feeling of astonishment touches each heart. They are no longer a small dark, old and damaged buildings but now someone out there not only knows they exist but someone out their cares enough to help them for re-construct.
